PREAS RÁITEAS THAR CEANN ARD-MHÚSAEM NA

You are invited to the
launch of
‘Stitches in
Time: Fashion inspired by the Soldiers & Chiefs Exhibition’
at the National Museum of Ireland
- Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks, Dublin at 2pm on Saturday 20th
September 2014
opened by LSAD
Graduate Niamh Lunny, Head
of Costume Design
at the Abbey Theatre.
Dress
designs inspired by gas-masks, 18th century soldier’s helmets,
rifles and a WWI parachute are among a dozen truly amazing garments on display
at the National Museum at Collins Barracks.
The
12 garments, inspired by the Museum’s award-winning exhibition, ‘Soldiers & Chiefs’, were designed
and made by a group of creative second year students of the BA (Hons) in
Fashion Design at Limerick School of Art
& Design L.I.T.
Students researched and designed from the
following themes;
·
The Wild Geese –
those Irish soldiers who fought in foreign armies, such as the French, Spanish
and Austrian armies from the 16th to 19th centuries
·
World Wars I and
II
·
The Irish Defence
Force
Michelle Molloy,
Fashion Design Lecturer at Limerick School of Art & Design said:
“The Fashion Department at Limerick School of Art and
Design are delighted with this partnership with the National Museum. Our students had the opportunity to research
and document the Soldiers and Chiefs exhibition first-hand, forming a valuable
understanding of the importance of primary research within their work. This
hands-on approach has greatly enhanced their understanding of historical
uniform and artefacts which is evident in the standard of finish and detail in
the final garments.”
The Museum is delighted to be involved in this partnership, according
to Helen Beaumont, Education & Outreach Officer at Collins Barracks - “This
project is an excellent example of the National Museum working in partnership
with a third level educational institution and also of fulfilling our remit as
a source of inspiration for young designers and artists.”
The
exhibition is on display at Collins Barracks until 26th October
2014.
